Wikipedia articles

Wikipedia is an online free-content encyclopaedia that anyone can edit. It is available in over 300 languages. The Wikipedia collection of the Swiss National Library (NL) comprises all articles with a link to Switzerland in the four national languages.

Content and scope

  • Articles belonging to the category Switzerland and published in the Wikipedia editions of the four national languages – German, French, Italian and Romansh
  • Images, charts, sounds, videos etc contained in the articles are also collected
  • Pages that are not part of the encyclopaedia, and that instead concern the Wikipedia organisation, such as project pages, redirects and user pages, are not collected
  • The collection was started in 2023 and comprises more than 125,000 articles
  • Estimated growth of 5,000 articles a year

Collection principles

  • Regular collection of new and modified articles
  • The collection is not governed by a law on legal deposit but by an agreement with Wikimedia CH 

Research and access

  • The articles are listed in Helveticat
  • The full texts can be searched for in e-Helvetica Access, the gateway to the NL’s digital collections
  • The archived articles are freely accessible
  • The articles are preserved in the NL’s long-term archive so that they remain accessible for future generations
