Old views of the Gotthard

The Devil’s Bridge – built, according to legend, by the Devil himself – is the first means of crossing the previously impassable Schöllenen Gorge.

The Urnerloch Tunnel, constructed between 1707 and 1708, allows travellers to avoid another dangerous stretch of the route.

The famous Hospental Castle presides over the confluence of the Furkareuss and Gotthardreuss rivers.

The new Gotthard road was built in the 1830s, and with it came a new Devil’s Bridge.
