The 2016 Gotthard Base Tunnel

The 1980 road tunnel
The Gotthard road tunnel is opened on 5 September 1980 with a public festival. The tunnel is not without controversy: while it earns praise as an engineering achievement, some fear an increase in road traffic.
The 1882 rail tunnel
The rail tunnel through the Gotthard was constructed from 1880 to 1882 at the instigation of Alfred Escher. The controversial project was funded jointly by Italy, Germany and Switzerland.
The pass road since the Devil’s Bridge
The oldest surviving account of a trip over the Gotthard and the Devil’s Bridge dates back to the year 1234. Over the centuries, the Gotthard Pass route evolved from a humble mountain trail into a busy road. It was the site of the first road tunnel in the Alps in 1707.
