History
The history of the Swiss National Library began in 1895 in a four-room apartment in the centre of Bern. The NL moved to its current location in the Kirchenfeld district in 1931.

Prints and Drawings Department
In the Prints and Drawings Department, you can find collections of prints, posters, photographs, postcards, artists’ books and archives, as well as documents from the Federal Archives of Historic Monuments relating to historic buildings, archaeological digs and the protection of built heritage and landscapes.

Swiss Literary Archives
The Swiss Literary Archives were founded in 1991 at the instigation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt. They hold numerous literary estates, archives and authors' libraries from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Swiss National Sound Archives
The Swiss National Sound Archives preserve the country’s audio heritage, collect and catalogue audio documents (Helvetica) of all kinds, both music and spoken word, from the beginnings of sound recording to the present day.

Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel
The Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel presents the work of the Swiss writer and painter Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990) and also stages temporary exhibitions and events. Located in the Vallon de l’Ermitage, it was designed by Mario Botta.

Bern Museum Quarter
This is where culture, history, science, art and innovation meet to inspire visitors with a lively mix of impressions and emotions. The Swiss National Library is proud to be an active part of this vibrant network.
