Layers of women’s lives

From 8 March to 14 June 2025, the NL is presenting an exhibition of collages from 1975 that reflect women’s lives. Visitors are also invited to take part in a collaborative work during their visit.

Colour Space

From 9 November 2024 to 24 January 2025, the NL is presenting an exhibition of prints from Edition VFO (Verein für Originalgraphik) and from its Prints and Drawings Department. The works will be juxtaposed in seven thematic areas.

Which images shaped the year 2023? In the exhibition by the Reinhardt von Graffenried Foundation, the NL is presenting from 17 July to 11 October 2024 the best Swiss press photographs from last year.

Writing the silver screen: from literature to cinema and vice versa

There has always been a passionate relationship between literature and cinema. The exhibition (31 August 2023 – 12 January 2024) provides an overview of these turbulent interrelations based on documents from the Swiss Literary Archives.

What exactly is a chalet? What does really make it special? From 10 March to 30 June 2023, the exhibition “Chalet” takes visitors on a tongue-in-cheek, educational and entertaining journey through this quintessentially Swiss phenomenon.

How will we write in future? And what impact will that have on the texts we produce? From 16 September 2022 to 13 January 2023, the exhibition “Writing” explores the new writing techniques that have taken over our everyday lives.

Snow. The wonder in white

From 4 March to 1 July 2022 the exhibition “Snow” invites you to engage with the wonder in white through a range of playful, scientific, poetic and artistic exhibits. Guided tours, a reading evening and other events complement the exhibition.

Fifty years ago, Switzerland’s electorate doubled in size at a stroke. The introduction of votes for women in 1971 constituted the largest expansion of the voting public in the history of the nation’s democratic system. Half a century on from that momentous event, the Swiss National Library takes a close look at political and cultural participation in Switzerland.

Meat - An Exhibition on the Inner Life

From 4 March to 30 June 2021 we turn our attention to meat, following it from the table back via the butcher’s shop and the slaughterhouse to the farm. We reveal what’s in the meat we consume, where it comes from, and where its future lies.

Le LSD. Les 75 ans d’un enfant terrible

7.9.2018–11.1.2019 C’est en 1943 qu’Albert Hofmann a découvert les effets hallucinogènes du LSD. En s’inspirant du best-seller du chimiste suisse « LSD, mon enfant terrible », la bibliothèque nationale raconte dans cette exposition l’histoire de cette substance située à mi-chemin entre drogue miracle et œuvre diabolique.

Vu du ciel. Du ballon de Spelterini au drone.

28.02.–28.06.2019 A quoi ressemble la Suisse vue du ciel ? Pour un large public, ce sont les photographies d’Eduard Spelterini qui, d’abord, ont répondu à cette question. A cette époque, il fallait avoir un réel esprit de pionnier pour faire des photos depuis les airs. Aujourd’hui, le drone rend la photographie aérienne accessible à tous.

Parkett. 101 Contemporary Art Books

2.3.–29.6.2018 Parkett is many things: a book series, a global network for art practitioners and researchers, and an edition project. The exhibition looks back at the last 34 years of contemporary art, not just in the National Library but also online.

Les lectures de Lénine. Le révolutionnaire à la Bibliothèque nationale

26.6.–26.8.2017 Entre 1914 et 1916, un journaliste et écrivain russe à la mise discrète fréquente la Bibliothèque nationale suisse. Un an après, cet « emprunteur » sera la figure de proue de la révolution russe. Une soixantaine de fiches de prêt nous renseignent sur ce que lisait Lénine à la veille de l’insurrection d’octobre.

tü-ta-too. L’oreille en voyage

14.3.–10.6.2017 Y a-t-il une sonorité particulière à la Suisse ? Personne n’est mieux placé pour le savoir que la Phonothèque nationale suisse, qui collectionne les sons et les accents du pays. L’exposition « tü-ta-too » propose un voyage dans le patrimoine sonore de la Suisse. Elle est à voir et à entendre du 14 mars au 10 juin 2017 à la Bibliothèque nationale suisse.

Bundeshaus

Bundesbauten. Die Architektur der offiziellen Schweiz

14.10.–10.11.2016 Die Wanderausstellung des Bundesamts für Bauten und Logistik BBL ist vom 14. Oktober bis am 10. November 2016 in der Schweizerischen Nationalbibliothek zu sehen. Sie zeigt: Bauen für den Bund ist mehr als die Bereitstellung von Fläche und Raum. Es ist eine kulturelle Aufgabe.

The Photobook and its Authors
