A project of the Swiss Conference of Cantonal libraries (SKKB)
The project 'Vintage Swiss postcards' aims to present the collections of postcards held by cantonal libraries and the Swiss National Library, and through this to, to publicize libraries. The idea is to show Switzerland as it was - 100 years ago - using postcards of Swiss municipalities.
Each library catalogues and digitizes its postcards and provides metadata. The postcards and metadata are converted and loaded on a web platform made available to project partners for administrative purposes.
The web platform was designed and built by the Haute Ecole d'Ingénierie et de Gestion du Canton de Vaud (HEIG-VD). From this, the HEIG-VD developed an app for smartphone and tablet. The app is very simple: Users may move around a map of Switzerland and select a municipality for which there is a postcard. Another option is to type in a place name and reach the appropriate place on the map, then display the postcard or its metadata. The postcard can be shared with friends via the usual channels (MMS, Chat, Mail, Facebook, etc.) or be printed out and sent like a real postcard.
The following libraries are partners: Bibliothek Zug, Bibliothèque de Genève, Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire de Fribourg, Burgerbibliothek Bern, Kantonsbibliothek Vadiana St. Gallen, Swiss National Library (partner and coordinator), Médiathèque Valais, Zentralbibliothek Solothurn, Zentralbibliothek Zürich et Zentral- und Hochschulbibliothek Luzern.
Other libraries are welcome to join.
