Restorers who work at maintaining collections specialise in the conservation / restoration of books, graphic artwork and photographs. These areas are representative of the types of items most com-monly found in the collections of the Swiss National Library. Restorers are specialists who determine and monitor the acceptable limits for moisture, temperature, light and toxic gases in the exhibition areas and storage rooms of the collections. Optimising these conditions is one of the most important aspects of preventive conservation.
Certain items require suitable packaging to ensure optimal storage conditions. Packaging for items is generally standardised, but may also be produced in-house for special cases.
The specialists also issue instructions on conservation for the use and handling of collections in the reading rooms, for exhibits and loans.
