The Swiss National Library aims to conserve the documents entrusted to it in perfect condition. The two underground stacks provide ideal storage conditions for the five million documents. The temperature is maintained at a constant 18°C with a humidity of 45% - perfect for storing paper.
Our in-house bookbinding and collection maintenance services carry out and oversee further preventive measures to protect our holdings. It is also important to make users aware of conservation issues.
Users are obliged to comply with the requirement under Article 16.1 of the Regulations to "treat Library items with care." The following four bookmarks contain instructions on how to treat NL documents. Copies are available in the public areas, and we also distribute them actively.
