Collection maintenance

Restoring a book cover
© NL

In accordance with conservation guidelines, the focus of the work in collection maintenance is on preventive measures rather than costly restoration work of a few precious objects. Nevertheless, when the need arises, documents are restored according to the rule of minimal intervention. Processes and measures are described in our Guidelines.

Our service also calls upon external workshops to perform restoration work on certain items according to the norms set by the Preservation and Conservation Service of the Swiss National Library.

Restoration is done according to the level of work needed to maintain an item in conditions allowing its use rather than seeking complete restoration of the item.
