Commercial publications

Commercial publications

The Swiss National Library (NL) collects online publications from a selection of Swiss publishers. In association with publishing houses and distributors, it is progressively assembling a collection of e-books and e-journals. Online publications from publishing houses such as Karger and vdf Hochschulverlag as well as publishers that are represented by the e-book distributor mbassador are now subject to long-term archiving at the NL.

The NL has made available to publishers recommendations for submitting online publications, templates for delivering metadata (MODS), and the NL guidelines for the online Helvetica collection.

Submission recommendations

Empfehlungen für die Anlieferung von elektronischen Verlagspublikationen an die Schweizerische Nationalbibliothek für die Langzeitarchivierung, Version 1.10, 10.2013 (in German) (PDF, 42 kB, 01.10.2013)This document contains the relevant information concerning the transfer of online commercial publications to the Swiss National Library. It lists technical recommendations for the transfer of documents, the format for digital objects and for metadata.

MODS metadata model

MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema) is a metadata standard developed by the Library of Congress. MODS is based on an XML schema designed to describe bibliographic data. The MODS models can be used as templates to deliver the metadata accompanying electronic publications to the NL.

Guidelines for the online Helvetica collection

Sammelrichtlinien für Online-Helvetica: provisorische Fassung, Arbeitsversion 1.0, 25. März 2003 (in German) (PDF, 64 kB, 04.06.2008)Besides general considerations regarding the Swiss National Library’s (NL) collection development policy, the document contains general guidelines regarding the development of the online Helvetica collection at the NL.

Self-publishing and small publishers

The Swiss National Library also collects self-published e-books as well as those produced by small publishers. Authors and publishers may deposit their books via the e-Helvetica Deposit platform. This platform is designed for publishers who want to deposit only a small number of books per year. The NL then registers the works in its catalogue and ensures their long-term conservation.
