International collaboration

At the international level, the Swiss National Library (NL) collaborates with other national libraries. It also participates in international projects.

German National Library (GNL) and Austrian National Library (ANL)

Colleagues exchange information and experience on a regular basis and coordinate archiving projects.
Until now cooperation has focused on the field of online university publications and persistent identifiers.

International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC)

The Swiss National Library takes part in international projects such as the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC), which comprises most European national libraries as well as major national libraries worldwide. The mission of the IIPC is to enable the collection of a rich body of Internet content from around the world to be preserved in such a way that it can be archived, preserved and accessed over time. The consortium also seeks to promote the development and use of common tools, techniques and standards that enable the creation of international archives and to encourage and support national libraries everywhere to address Internet archiving and preservation.
We regularly work together with IIPC to set up collaborative collections. These contain websites of international significance. The goal is to create a web archive that covers topics and events that overlap the archiving mandate of the individual institutions.

Internet Memory Foundation (previously: The European Archive)

In 2007-2008 the NL worked together with the European Archive (now: Internet Memory Foundation).
After the 2007 Swiss federal elections, the NL mandated the European Archive (EA) to harvest selected websites relating to the elections. In 2008, the EA harvested selected websites relating to the EURO 2008 for the NL. The websites relating to both events have been indexed in the Swiss National Library's catalogue.

The Internet Archive (IA)

The NL also collaborates with the Internet Archive (IA) in San Francisco. The IA, a nonprofit organization, was established in 1996 to develop an Internet library and ensure permanent access to digital information. The IA has conducted crawls of selected Swiss websites under contract with the NL.
