Snow. The wonder in white

From 4 March to 1 July 2022 the exhibition “Snow” invites you to engage with the wonder in white through a range of playful, scientific, poetic and artistic exhibits. Guided tours, a reading evening and other events complement the exhibition.

Snow never leaves us cold – a snow flurry can make us feel safe and snug when we’re indoors, can make a ski run that bit more exciting, and can make a walk in the mountains a little bit magical.  We can rekindle the wonder of those moments when we shake a snow globe. And it’s not only childhood dreams that involve snow. But does the snow have to be real for it to be magical? Around half of Switzerland’s ski slopes are now groomed with artificial snow. And with climate change, snow is becoming something of a rare commodity that can be replaced by a synthetic product.

The exhibition traces the history of snow. The first flakes fell long before we humans inhabited the Earth. Over the course of the last 150 years, we have radically redefined snow, from hazard – to tourist attraction – to replaceable substance. And the development of the high Alpine region and the rise in the snow line have changed Switzerland’s nature and culture. What snow will fall in the Switzerland of the future? The “Snow. The wonder in white” exhibition invites you to engage with this question through a range of playful, scientific, poetic and artistic exhibits.
