The “Artists and Books” research project provides the first ever overview of the Swiss artists’ book, investigates its status as an art object, and offers a new definition of the term.
The “Artists and Books” research project sets out to conduct an academic appraisal of Swiss artists’ books held by the Swiss National Library (NL) and other national and international collections. It presents the first ever overview of the Swiss artists’ book, investigates its status as an art object, and redefines what the term means. Helveticat, the NL’s library catalogue, forms the basis for definition and categorisation. Academic research into the artists’ book as a cultural phenomenon is a major addition to scholarship on Swiss art history from 1880 to 2015. The project is also a contribution to cultural history in the broader sense: multilingual and therefore multicultural in nature, the works analysed highlight both the national and the international dimension of the Swiss artists’ book.
Heads of project: Prof. Philippe Kaenel (Art History Department, University of Lausanne), Dr. Susanne Bieri (Prints and Drawings Department, Swiss National Library)
