The very heart of the Swiss National Library is its Helvetica collection; it measures 63'000 linear metres and contains more than 5,6 million items:

- The general collection is made up of books, newspapers, magazines, geographical maps, printed music and other printed documents.

- The digital collection is currently being developed.

- The Swiss Literary Archives (SLA) attends to approximately 250 archival fonds, personal archives and larger archival collections of authors having a reference to Switzerland.

- The print and drawing collection contains prints from the 17th to the 21st century, the photograph collection, the postcard collection, the poster collection as well as other iconographic collections. The Federal Archive of Historic Monuments is part of the print and drawing collection.

- The Swiss National Library also houses numerous special collections.
