The Swiss National Library Commission is an extra-parliamentary commission that is elected for a four-year period by the Federal Council. Its function and its responsibilities are regulated by the Federal Act of 18 December 1992 on the Swiss National Library (432.21) and by the Ordinance of 14 January 1998 on the Swiss National Library (432.211).
The commission monitors developments in library science and can make proposals to the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA). It promotes cooperation in the field of library science, must be consulted in important decisions pertaining to libraries, and deals with questions relating to Swiss policy in the area of scientific information and documentation taking account of general scientific policy.
